Day 91: Rehearsing Over Breakfast

At breakfast in Mainz, Ines Hartung (A), a product manager, rehearses tomorrow's board presentation with her husband Marco (B), who plays the toughest member of the board.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    You're Mr BrandstÀtter now, the toughest man on the board. In view of the security holes the penetration test uncovered, we're postponing the app launch by three months.

    Three months, Ms Hartung? I'm told the poster campaign was booked ages ago.

    Then the posters will just go up in the autumn. When it comes to security, on the other hand, there's no leeway: bank details are at stake, after all.

    And regarding the budget? Three months' delay could easily cost 150,000 euros, without a cent of revenue.

    From your own spreadsheet, here next to the butter. It went out with the meeting papers, so BrandstÀtter must have read it ages ago.

    Dann kontere ich eben so: Infolge eines Datenlecks drohen uns nach der DSGVO Bußgelder in Millionenhöhe, vom Imageschaden ganz zu schweigen.

    Then I'll hit back like this: a data leak could land us with GDPR fines running into millions, not to mention the damage to our reputation.

    Das sitzt. BrandstĂ€tter dĂŒrfte trotzdem grummeln, aber das hat er ja sogar beim Empfang anlĂ€sslich seines eigenen sechzigsten Geburtstags getan.

    That hits home. BrandstÀtter will probably grumble anyway, but then he even did that at the reception for his own sixtieth birthday.
