Day 92: Back From Brazil, Forms in Hand
In the canteen of the University of Greifswald, Samuel (A), a first-year student who grew up in Brazil with German parents, turns to Nico (B), an older student who grew up in Chile and now works as a student adviser.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Du bist doch Nico von der Studienberatung, oder? Ich bin Samuel, in São Paulo aufgewachsen, und verzweifle gerade an meinem Schulzeugnis.
You're Nico from student advice, aren't you? I'm Samuel, I grew up in São Paulo, and my school certificate is driving me to despair.
-
B
Setz dich. Lass mich raten: Du bist nur vorläufig eingeschrieben, bis dein Abschluss anerkannt ist?
Have a seat. Let me guess: you're only provisionally enrolled until your qualification has been recognised?
-
A
Genau. Die Übersetzung habe ich schon beglaubigt bekommen, nur will die Behörde jetzt das Original sehen.
Exactly. I've already had the translation certified, but now the authorities want to see the original.
-
B
Kenn ich, mit meinem chilenischen Zeugnis war's genauso. Du reichst es ein, und nach der Prüfung bekommst du es zurückgeschickt.
Been there, it was just the same with my Chilean certificate. You hand it in, and once they've checked it, you get it sent back.

Das Original liegt aber bei meiner Tante in Campinas. Soll sie mein einziges Exemplar etwa über den Atlantik schicken?
But the original is at my aunt's in Campinas. Is she really supposed to send my only copy across the Atlantic?

B
Meins kam per Kurier mit Sendungsverfolgung in vier Tagen an. Härter war das erste Semester, bis ich über das International Office einen Buddy bekam.
Mine came by courier with tracking in four days. The first term was harder, until I got a buddy through the International Office.
-
A
Einen Buddy, wie auf Klassenfahrt? Was hat der denn für dich getan?
A buddy, like on a school trip? What did he actually do for you?
-
B
Er hat mich überallhin begleitet, sei es zum Bürgerbüro, sei es zur Krankenkasse. Ohne ihn hätte ich im November hingeschmissen.
He came with me everywhere, be it the citizens' office or the health insurance. Without him I'd have thrown in the towel by November.

A
Und wenn ich mich anmelde, bekomme ich dann zufällig dich zugeteilt? Oder muss ich dafür auch erst etwas beglaubigen lassen?
And if I sign up, might I happen to get you assigned to me? Or do I have to get something certified for that first as well?
