Day 90: Yesterday's Bread for the Tafel
At a supermarket chain's regional office in Kassel, Nina Ebert (B), a junior sustainability officer, and Henrik Wagner (C), a junior logistics planner, put a proposal to their manager, Jochen Rössler (A).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

All the food that's left over in our twelve branches in the evening ends up in the bin, including crates of the previous day's bread.

We've done the maths: just under two tonnes a week. The Tafel, the food bank here in Kassel, would collect all of it, we've already asked.

Very noble, but what about liability? If somebody gets ill from out-of-date yoghurt, we'll be in the papers.

Rechtlich betrachtet ist das Einzige, worüber wir reden müssen, das Verbrauchsdatum. Das Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum ist dagegen kein Wegwerfdatum.
Legally speaking, the only thing we need to talk about is the use-by date. The best-before date, on the other hand, isn't a throw-away date.

Einmal von der Tafel abgeholt, fällt die Ware in deren Verantwortung, und dort sortieren Ehrenamtliche ohnehin alles noch mal.
Once the Tafel has collected it, the food is their responsibility, and volunteers there sort through all of it again anyway.

So gesehen spricht wenig dagegen. Drei Monate Probelauf, sofern Sie beide die Abholung mit den Filialen selbst organisieren.
Seen that way, there's not much against it. A three-month trial, provided the two of you organise the pickups with the branches yourselves.
