Day 35: Fifty Years of the Morning Paper

At the service desk of the local newspaper in Oldenburg, Hildegard Janssen (A), who has taken the paper for fifty years, comes to see Anton (B), a young member of staff.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Schweren Herzens möchte ich nach fünfzig Jahren mein Abonnement kündigen.

    With a heavy heart, I'd like to cancel my subscription after fifty years.

    Fünfzig Jahre? Dann halten Sie uns länger die Treue, als ich auf der Welt bin.

    Fifty years? Then you've been loyal to us for longer than I've been alive.

    Für einen so dürftigen Lokalteil sind mir fünfzig Euro zu viel, zumal über Eversten kaum noch etwas drinsteht.

    Fifty euros is too much for such meagre local pages, especially as there's hardly anything about Eversten in them any more.

    Wie wäre es mit dem E-Paper? Das kostet die Hälfte, und die Schrift lässt sich vergrößern.

    How about the e-paper? It costs half as much, and you can make the print bigger.

    Ich habe gar kein Tablet. Und bis ich eins bedienen kann, werden Sie den Lokalteil abgeschafft haben.

    I haven't even got a tablet. And by the time I can use one, you'll have scrapped the local pages.
