Day 34: More Data Than We Promised

At an AI start-up in Berlin, Luca (A) shows his fellow developer Carla (B) something odd he has found in the fitness app they are building.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Schau mal: Die App speichert alle fünf Minuten den Standort, auch wenn keiner trainiert.

    Look at this: the app saves the location every five minutes, even when nobody's working out.

    Davon steht in der Datenschutzerklärung kein Wort! Ohne Einwilligung der Nutzer ist das glatt rechtswidrig.

    The privacy notice doesn't say a word about that! Without the users' consent, that's plainly unlawful.

    Zehn Tage vor dem Launch? Alles, was den Start jetzt noch verzögert, bleibt an uns hängen.

    Ten days before the launch? We'll get the blame for anything that delays it now.

    Kommt das raus, sind die von uns heimlich gesammelten Daten ein gefundenes Fressen für die Presse.

    If this gets out, the data we've secretly collected will be a gift to the press.

    „Heimlich“ klingt nach Absicht. Können wir es nicht nach dem Launch still und leise entfernen?

    'Secretly' sounds deliberate. Can't we just quietly remove it after the launch?

    Still und leise vertuschen, meinst du? Wir gehen heute noch zur Datenschutzbeauftragten, zusammen.

    Quietly cover it up, you mean? We're going to the data protection officer today, together.

    Na gut, aber damit du's weißt: Die Standortabfrage habe ich im Frühjahr zum Testen eingebaut.
