Day 36: A Cargo Bike From Kleinanzeigen

In his garage at the foot of a steep street in Wuppertal, Jens (A) shows Emilia (B) the used electric cargo bike she found in his ad on Kleinanzeigen, the classifieds site.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    There it is, freshly serviced, rain cover included. For you, 2,400 instead of 2,600.

    Sehr nett, aber ich kaufe es nicht, ohne es auszuprobieren, schon gar nicht in Wuppertal.

    That's very kind, but I'm not buying it without trying it out, least of all in Wuppertal.

    Nur zu, einmal hoch bis zur Kirche. Der Akku ist voll geladen.

    Go ahead, just ride up to the church. The battery's fully charged.

    Voll geladen? Auf halber Höhe war nur noch ein Balken übrig, und oben war ich völlig außer Puste.

    Fully charged? Halfway up there was only one bar left, and by the top I was completely out of puff.

    Bei der Kälte lässt jeder Akku nach. Im Sommer schafft der locker sechzig Kilometer.

    Every battery flags in the cold. In summer it'll easily do sixty kilometres.

    Bei vierzehn Grad? Statt gut 800 Euro in einen neuen Akku zu stecken, suche ich lieber weiter.

    At fourteen degrees? Rather than sink a good 800 euros into a new battery, I'd sooner keep looking.

    Nicht so schnell! Sagen wir 2.200, und lassen wir die Kirche im Dorf.
