Day 28: A Letter to Mum's Boss

At bedtime in Bielefeld, Melanie (A) has some news for her son Ben (B) about their Fridays.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Noch was: Ab nächstem Monat holt dich freitags Oma von der Schule ab.

    One more thing: from next month Grandma's picking you up from school on Fridays.

    Wieso Oma? Freitags bist du doch im Homeoffice, und nachmittags backen wir Waffeln.

    Why Grandma? You work from home on Fridays, and in the afternoon we make waffles.

    Ich muss dann auch freitags ins Büro. Mein neuer Chef sagt: Je öfter wir uns sehen, desto besser arbeiten wir.

    I'll have to go into the office on Fridays too. My new boss says the more often we see each other, the better we work.

    Aber im Büro hast du doch nur Besprechungen, hast du selbst gesagt!

    But at the office you only have meetings, you said so yourself!

    Erwischt. Aber Chefs kommen und gehen: Bis zu deinem Geburtstag wird sich das vielleicht schon erledigt haben.

    Busted. But bosses come and go: by your birthday it may well have sorted itself out.

    Soll ich deinem Chef einen Brief schreiben? Je mehr Waffeln du freitags isst, desto besser arbeitest du!

    Shall I write your boss a letter? The more waffles you eat on Fridays, the better you work!

    Unbedingt, mit dieser Logik wirst du ihn bis Montag überzeugt haben. Aber jetzt Augen zu!
