Day 29: Coffee Used to Cost Less
In a supermarket in Chemnitz, Luisa (A), an apprentice, goes shopping with her grandmother Karin (B), who compares every price with what it cost five years ago.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Oma, gegen die Inflation hilft es auch nicht, jeden Preis mit damals zu vergleichen.
Grandma, comparing every price with the old days won't do anything about inflation.
-
B
Mir schon! Vor fünf Jahren hat das Pfund Kaffee um die fünf Euro gekostet, heute fast acht.
It helps me! Five years ago half a kilo of coffee cost about five euros, and now it's nearly eight.

Deine Rente ist wenigstens erhöht worden. Wenn meine Miete abgebucht ist, bleibt kaum was übrig.
At least your pension has gone up. Once my rent has gone out, there's hardly anything left.
-
B
Das sagst du erst jetzt? Ich jammere über Kaffee, und du sparst dir alles vom Mund ab.
And you're only telling me now? Here I am moaning about coffee, and you're scrimping on everything.
-
A
Ich komme klar, Oma. Dein Geld nehme ich nicht an, das steht nicht zur Debatte.
I'm managing, Grandma. I'm not taking your money, that's out of the question.
-
B
Wer redet denn von Geld? Ab sofort übernehme ich dein Deutschlandticket, das ist beschlossene Sache.
Who said anything about money? From now on I'm paying for your Deutschlandticket, and that's final.

A
Danke, Oma. Aber das sind fast acht Pfund Kaffee im Monat, ist dir das klar?
Thanks, Grandma. But that's nearly four kilos of coffee a month, do you realise?
