Day 27: One Leaving, One Coming Back

On an ICE from Frankfurt Airport to Würzburg, Carina (A), a young nurse about to start a job in Norway, sits next to Silke (B), a woman coming back to Germany after twenty years in the United States.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Sie ziehen wohl um? So viele Koffer habe ich im ICE noch nie gesehen.

    Moving house, are you? I've never seen so many suitcases on an ICE.

    Zurück nach Würzburg. Zwanzig Jahre Boston, und jetzt passt alles in vier Koffer.

    Back to Würzburg. Twenty years in Boston, and now it all fits into four suitcases.

    Bei mir ist es umgekehrt: Ab Mai arbeite ich als Pflegerin in Bergen, sofern die Anerkennung klappt.

    It's the other way round for me: from May I'm working as a nurse in Bergen, provided my qualification is recognised.

    Mutig. Und wovor graut Ihnen am meisten, abgesehen vom berüchtigten Bergener Regen?

    That's brave. And what do you dread most, apart from Bergen's notorious rain?

    Vor der Einsamkeit. Die Sprache lerne ich seit einem Jahr, wohingegen ich dort keine Menschenseele kenne.

    Loneliness. I've been learning the language for a year, whereas I don't know a single soul there.

    Ging mir damals genauso. Anschluss findet man, indem man in einen Verein eintritt, ob Chor oder Ruderclub.

    I felt just the same back then. You meet people by joining a club, whether it's a choir or a rowing club.

    Notiert. Falls Sie selbst einen brauchen: Mein Vater leitet in Würzburg einen Ruderverein, der händeringend Mitglieder sucht.
