Day 136: Eight Years in Texas, Then Ingolstadt

On his first day at a car parts supplier in Ingolstadt, Justus Reindl (B), a young engineer back from eight years in Texas, sits down with his new manager, Yvonne Kastner (A).

How to study this lesson 3 steps

    Welcome to Ingolstadt, Mr Reindl! Did the move from Texas actually go all right?

    Fast alles, nur mein Container hängt noch in Bremerhaven fest. Bis er da ist, wohne ich im Hotel, und langsam frage ich mich, wer das bezahlt.

    Almost everything, only my container's still stuck in Bremerhaven. Until it arrives I'm staying in a hotel, and I'm starting to wonder who's paying for it.

    Das übernehmen wir, keine Sorge. Sie bekommen das Hotel bis zu drei Monate lang erstattet und den Umzug komplett bezahlt, Container inklusive.

    We'll cover that, don't worry. You'll get the hotel reimbursed for up to three months and the move paid for in full, container included.

    You're back in Germany: of course there's a form for it. You can also make use of our relocation service to find a flat.

    Die Formulare habe ich fast schon vermisst. Was mir als Rückkehrer eher fehlt, ist der Smalltalk: Heute Morgen im Aufzug hat keiner ein Wort gesagt.

    I'd almost missed the forms. What I miss more, now I'm back, is the small talk: in the lift this morning nobody said a word.

    Da müssen Sie bis mittags warten. Ab elf sagt Ihnen hier auf dem Flur jeder „Mahlzeit“, und das zählt in Bayern schon als Gespräch.

    You'll have to wait till lunchtime for that. From eleven, everyone in the corridor here greets you with 'Mahlzeit', 'enjoy your lunch', and in Bavaria that already counts as a conversation.

    Und was antwortet man darauf? In Texas hätte ich jetzt von meinem Wochenende erzählt.

    And what do you say back? In Texas I'd have started telling them about my weekend by now.

    Einfach auch „Mahlzeit“. Üben können Sie das um halb zwölf beim Teamessen in der Kantine, zu dem Sie hiermit offiziell eingeladen sind.

    Just 'Mahlzeit' back. You can practise at half past eleven at the team lunch in the canteen, to which you are hereby officially invited.
