Day 135: Lost at the Krämerbrückenfest
At the Krämerbrückenfest, a summer street festival in Erfurt, Friederike (A), a young woman handing out flyers for a new youth council, comes across Emmi (B), a girl who has lost her father.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Hey, what's the matter? Have you lost your parents in all this bustle?

Meinen Papa. Ich habe nur kurz beim Holzspielzeug geguckt, und auf einmal war er in der Menge verschwunden.
My dad. I only stopped for a moment to look at the wooden toys, and all of a sudden he'd disappeared into the crowd.

Das kriegen wir hin, ich bin übrigens Friederike. Am Infostand kann dein Papa per Durchsage ausgerufen werden, da gehen wir jetzt zusammen hin.
We'll sort this out; I'm Friederike, by the way. At the information stand they can call your dad over the loudspeakers, so let's go there together now.

Ich bin Emmi. Was steht denn auf den bunten Flyern, die Sie die ganze Zeit verteilen?
I'm Emmi. What's on those colourful leaflets you keep handing out?

Die sind für den neuen Jugendrat. Der soll die Belange der Jugendlichen im Stadtrat vertreten und muss im Herbst erst noch gewählt werden.
They're for the new youth council. It's meant to represent young people's interests on the city council, and it still has to be elected in the autumn.

Darf ich da auch mitwählen? Ich bin schon neun, und bei uns im Viertel fehlt dringend ein Skatepark.
Can I vote too? I'm nine already, and our neighbourhood badly needs a skate park.

Wahlberechtigt ist man erst ab vierzehn, es sei denn, die Stadt ändert das noch. Vorschläge können aber auch von Jüngeren eingereicht werden, deiner also auch.
You can only vote from fourteen, unless the city changes that. But younger children can put forward ideas too, so yours can as well.

Dann schlage ich noch was vor: Auf Festen müssen alle Papas an die Hand genommen werden!
Then I've got another idea: at festivals, all dads must be held by the hand!
