Day 134: Grandad's New Lens
In Oldenburg, Lilly (A) visits her grandfather Gerhard (B) the day after his cataract operation.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Grandad, Mum says they cut your eye open yesterday. Didn't that hurt terribly?
-
B
Not a bit, they numb the eye with drops first. A cataract like mine can be operated on in twenty minutes these days.
-
A
And what exactly is a cataract? You always said you saw everything as if through a dirty pair of glasses.

The lens in my eye had gone cloudy over the years. The doctor broke it up with ultrasound, sucked it out and replaced it with a new plastic one.
-
A
Yuck, plastic in your eye! Doesn't it scratch when you blink, like sand?
-
B
You can't feel the new lens at all, and you can't see it either. In a few weeks the eye will have healed completely.

Then let's do a test now. What colour is the horse in the picture I painted for you?
-
B
Purple, with a dark blue saddle, and the mane's turquoise! Last week I'd have sworn it was all brown.
-
A
You even asked why my dog had a saddle! Then you'll have to look at all my pictures again now.
