Day 119: Scratches in the Parquet

At the move-out inspection of their shared flat in Aachen, flatmates Annika (A) and Henrike (B) watch their landlord, Volker Kerkhoff (C), inspect the parquet floor.

    Schau mal, Henrike, er kniet schon seit fünf Minuten im Wohnzimmer und fährt mit dem Finger über den Boden.

    Look, Henrike, he's been kneeling in the living room for five minutes, running his finger over the floor.

    Der wird doch nicht die Kratzer vor dem Fenster meinen? Die werden ja wohl die Vormieter gemacht haben.

    He's not going on about the scratches by the window, is he? Surely the previous tenants will have made those.

    Tja, hinsichtlich der Kaution muss ich Ihnen leider mitteilen, dass ich für die Kratzer im Parkett 400 Euro einbehalte.

    Well, regarding the deposit, I'm afraid I must inform you that I'm keeping 400 euros for the scratches in the parquet.

    Einen Moment, bitte. Die Kratzer waren schon beim Einzug da, ich habe damals jedes Zimmer fotografiert.

    Just a moment, please. The scratches were already there when we moved in: I photographed every room at the time.

    Angesichts der Tiefe dieser Kratzer halte ich das für wenig wahrscheinlich. Im Einzugsprotokoll steht jedenfalls nichts davon.

    Given how deep these scratches are, I find that rather unlikely. There's certainly nothing about them in the move-in report.

    Dann wird beim Einzug eben keiner so genau hingeschaut haben. Annika, zeig doch mal die Fotos.

    Then nobody can have looked very closely when we moved in. Annika, show him the photos.

    Hier, vom Einzugstag im Oktober 2023, mit Zeitstempel: dieselben drei Kratzer vor dem Fenster, sogar mit meinem Fuß als Größenvergleich.

    Here, from the day we moved in, October 2023, with a timestamp: the same three scratches by the window, even with my foot for scale.

    Nun gut, bezüglich der Kratzer ziehe ich meine Forderung zurück. Sie bekommen die volle Kaution bis Monatsende zurück.

    Very well, as far as the scratches are concerned, I withdraw my claim. You'll get the full deposit back by the end of the month.
