Day 120: Grandma's Ten Percent Offer

At his grandmother's flat in Augsburg, Emil (A), ten, tells his grandmother Sigrid (B) what he wants to do with his birthday money.

    Oma, mit deinem Geld habe ich jetzt 480 Euro zusammen! Das reicht genau für die neue Konsole.

    Grandma, with your money I've now got 480 euros altogether! That's exactly enough for the new console.

    Das Geld steht dir natürlich zur Verfügung, es ist ja dein Geschenk. Aber so eine Entscheidung trifft man nicht zwischen Tür und Angel.

    Of course the money's yours to use, it's your present after all. But you don't make a decision like that in passing.

    Warum nicht? Alle in meiner Klasse haben die schon, nur ich nicht.

    Why not? Everyone in my class has already got one, except me.

    Ich mache dir ein Angebot: Lässt du das Geld bis Neujahr auf deinem Konto, lege ich zehn Prozent obendrauf.

    I'll make you an offer: if you leave the money in your account until New Year, I'll add ten percent on top.

    Zehn Prozent, das sind ja ... 48 Euro! Warum machst du das?

    Ten percent, that's... 48 euros! Why would you do that?

    Weil dir keine Bank so eine Rendite zahlt. Und wer der Versuchung eine Weile widersteht, verdient eine Belohnung.

    Because no bank will pay you a return like that. And anyone who resists temptation for a while deserves a reward.

    Und wenn ich die Hälfte jetzt ausgebe und nur den Rest liegen lasse?

    And what if I spend half now and just leave the rest?

    Kommt nicht in Frage, mein Schatz: alles oder nichts. Schlaf eine Nacht darüber, dann triffst du deine Entscheidung.

    Out of the question, darling: all or nothing. Sleep on it, and then make your decision.

    Muss ich nicht, abgemacht! Nach Weihnachten ist die Konsole sicher billiger, und deine 48 Euro habe ich dann auch noch.

    No need, it's a deal! After Christmas the console's bound to be cheaper, and then I'll have your 48 euros on top.
