Day 118: A Cargo Bike Between Siblings
In the courtyard of his block of flats in Ulm, Robin (B) shows his old electric cargo bike to his younger sister Leonie (A), who bakes cakes for cafés and wants to deliver them by bike.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

1.500 Euro für ein sieben Jahre altes Lastenrad? Du tust ja so, als ob es gerade aus dem Laden käme.
1,500 euros for a seven-year-old cargo bike? You're acting as if it had just come out of the shop.

Schau dir mal den Akku an: Den habe ich letztes Jahr auf Kulanz ersetzt bekommen. Die Bremsen sind auch neu.
Take a look at the battery: I got it replaced free as a goodwill gesture last year. The brakes are new too.

Dafür ist die Kiste total zerkratzt. Mehr als tausend ist nicht drin, ich fange ja gerade erst an.
But the box is all scratched. A thousand's my limit, I'm only just starting out.
-
B
Tausend, als ob ich es verschenken würde! Überleg mal, was du beim Ausliefern an Sprit und Nerven sparst.
A thousand, as if I were giving it away! Think how much petrol and stress you'll save on deliveries.
-
A
Gut, 1.200, aber nur mit der Kühlbox, die seit Jahren in deinem Keller verstaubt.
Fine, 1,200, but only with the cool box that's been gathering dust in your cellar for years.
-
B
Einverstanden, unter einer Bedingung: Bei meinem nächsten Umzug leihst du mir das Rad einen ganzen Tag.
Agreed, on one condition: when I next move house, you lend me the bike for a whole day.
-
A
Einen ganzen Tag, als würdest du aus einer Villa ausziehen! Meinetwegen, aber bring es bloß nicht mit leerem Akku zurück.
A whole day, as if you were moving out of a mansion! All right, but don't you dare bring it back with a flat battery.

Abgemacht. Und falls mal eine Torte übrig bleibt, bekomme ich sie hoffentlich vorbeigebracht, sozusagen als Treuebonus.
Deal. And if there's ever a cake left over, I hope I'll get it delivered, as a loyalty bonus, so to speak.
