Day 91: Our Teacher Is Going to Madrid

At a primary school in Bremerhaven, Finja (A), a pupil, stays behind after class to ask her class teacher, Mrs Tammen (B), about something she has heard.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mrs Tammen, is the rumour true? Are you going to Madrid?

    Oh, das hat sich also schon rumgesprochen. Ich hätte es euch selbst sagen sollen.

    Oh, so word has got round already. I should have told you all myself.

    Meine Mama hat es beim Bäcker gehört. Gefällt es Ihnen bei uns nicht mehr?

    My mum heard it at the baker's. Don't you like it here with us any more?

    Doch, sehr. Aber ich wollte schon immer ins Ausland, und je länger ich zögere, desto schwerer wird's.

    Yes, I do, very much. But I've always wanted to go abroad, and the longer I put it off, the harder it gets.

    Vermissen Sie uns dann nicht? Dürfen wir Ihnen Briefe nach Madrid schreiben?

    Won't you miss us, then? Can we write letters to you in Madrid?

    Und wie! Wenn ihr mir schreibt, bekommt jeder von euch eine Antwort.

    I certainly will! If you write to me, every one of you will get a reply.

    Abgemacht. Aber den ersten Brief schreiben Sie, weil Sie es uns nicht selbst erzählt haben.

    Deal. But you write the first letter, because you didn't tell us yourself.
