Day 92: Instant Noodles in the First Semester

In the shared kitchen of a student hall in Konstanz, Marek (A), a first-year student, is making lunch when his neighbour Frederik (B), a master's student, comes in.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Moment, bin gleich fertig. Die Nudeln brauchen nur drei Minuten.

    Hang on, nearly done. The noodles only take three minutes.

  2. B

    Schon wieder? Du isst die jeden Tag, obwohl die Mensa gleich um die Ecke ist.

    Again? You eat those every day, even though the canteen's just round the corner.

    Für die Mensa reicht mein Budget nicht. Und außer Nudeln kann ich ehrlich gesagt nichts kochen.

    My budget won't stretch to the canteen. And to be honest, I can't cook anything except noodles.

    Das Tagesgericht kostet nicht mal fünf Euro. Im ersten Semester lebte ich auch nur von Nudeln.

    The daily special costs less than five euros. In my first semester I lived on nothing but noodles too.

    Und? Sieht man dir gar nicht an.

    So? You'd never know.

  6. B

    Aber ich war ständig müde, bis mich ein Nachbar zum Rudern mitnahm. Komm doch Samstag mit!

    But I was tired all the time, until a neighbour took me rowing. Why don't you come along on Saturday?

    Rudern? Na gut, aber nur, wenn du mich am Montag in die Mensa mitnimmst.

    Rowing? All right, but only if you take me to the canteen on Monday.
