Day 90: Who Takes Over the Workshop?

In his joinery workshop in Koblenz, Axel (A), a carpenter who retires next summer, tells his daughter Leonie (B), an architect, about his plans for the business.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Ich hab einen Käufer. Bis zum Sommer werde ich die Werkstatt verkauft haben.

    I've got a buyer. By the summer I'll have sold the workshop.

  2. B

    Verkauft? Papa, bevor du unterschreibst: Ich hätte da eine Idee.

    Sold? Dad, before you sign anything, I've got an idea.

    Du? Du hast doch seit Jahren kein Werkzeug mehr angefasst.

    You? You haven't picked up a tool in years.

  4. B

    Muss ich auch nicht. Ich entwerfe hier Möbel, und du baust sie an zwei Tagen die Woche.

    I don't need to. I'll design furniture here, and you'll build it two days a week.

    Klingt verlockend. Aber die ganze Heizung müsste erneuert werden, und das kostet ein Vermögen.

    Sounds tempting. But the whole heating system would have to be replaced, and that costs a fortune.

  6. B

    Schon durchgerechnet. Und ohne Werkstatt wirst du dich nach drei Wochen zu Tode gelangweilt haben.

    I've already done the sums. And without the workshop you'll have bored yourself to death within three weeks.
