Day 84: Eleven Past Eleven in Cologne

On a regional train into Cologne on the eleventh of November, Giulia (A), a visitor from Italy, turns to Yvonne (B), a woman dressed as a bee.

    Excuse me, why is everyone in fancy dress? Have I missed a holiday?

    Fast. Um elf Uhr elf beginnt heute der Karneval, bei uns die fünfte Jahreszeit.

    Close. Carnival starts today at eleven minutes past eleven: our fifth season.

    Ach, deshalb dieses Chaos! Je näher wir Köln kommen, desto voller wird der Zug.

    Oh, so that's why it's so chaotic! The closer we get to Cologne, the fuller the train gets.

    Und Sie? Ohne Verkleidung fallen Sie heute auf wie ein bunter Hund.

    And what about you? Without a costume you'll stick out like a sore thumb today.

    Ich habe nichts dabei, und für ein Kostüm ist es wohl zu spät.

    I haven't got anything with me, and I suppose it's too late for a costume.

  6. B

    Es muss ja nicht gleich ein Kostüm gekauft werden. Hier, meine rote Ersatznase, damit gehen Sie locker als Kölnerin durch.

    You don't have to go and buy a costume straight away. Here, my spare red nose: with that, you'll easily pass for someone from Cologne.
