Day 78: A Week of Samples Ruined

In a lab at the university in Ilmenau, Luis (A), a student assistant, has bad news for Professor Almut Hellwig (B), who runs the lab.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Frau Hellwig, mir ist ein Fehler passiert. Der Tiefkühlschrank stand übers Wochenende offen.

    Professor Hellwig, I've made a mistake. The freezer was open all weekend.

    Wie bitte? Da lagen die Proben einer ganzen Woche drin!

    What? There was a whole week's worth of samples in there!

    Nachdem ich die Proben eingeräumt hatte, habe ich die Tür wohl nicht richtig zugedrückt.

    After I'd put the samples away, I can't have pushed the door shut properly.

    Das hätten Sie doch merken müssen! Ist der Alarm denn nicht losgegangen?

    You should have noticed! Didn't the alarm go off?

    Welcher Alarm? Hätte mir den jemand gezeigt, hätte ich ihn natürlich eingeschaltet.

    What alarm? If anyone had shown it to me, I'd obviously have switched it on.

    Da haben Sie recht, ich hätte Sie längst einweisen müssen. Bevor Sie weitermachen, gehen wir die Anleitung zusammen durch.
