Day 77: Four More Weeks for the Thesis

In her office at the university in Jena, Professor Friederike Kühn (B) has a visit from Arne (A), who is writing his bachelor's thesis with her.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Frau Kühn, störe ich? Ich müsste Sie wegen meiner Bachelorarbeit sprechen.

    Professor Kühn, am I disturbing you? I need to speak to you about my bachelor's thesis.

    Natürlich. Sie sehen ziemlich erschöpft aus, ist alles in Ordnung?

    Of course. You look rather worn out, is everything all right?

    Ich habe seit Wochen so heftige Panikattacken, dass ich kaum schreiben kann. Ich bräuchte vier Wochen mehr Zeit.

    For weeks I've been having such bad panic attacks that I can hardly write. I'd need four more weeks.

    Danke für Ihre Offenheit. Für eine Verlängerung braucht das Prüfungsamt aber ein Attest.

    Thank you for being so open. But the exams office will need a doctor's note for an extension.

    Das habe ich schon. Die Ärztin meinte aber, die Diagnose gehöre da nicht rein?

    I've already got one. But the doctor said the diagnosis doesn't belong on it?

    Stimmt, die geht niemanden etwas an. Kennen Sie übrigens die kostenlose psychologische Beratung des Studierendenwerks?

    That's right, that's nobody's business. By the way, do you know about the free counselling service run by student services?

    Mein Mitbewohner meinte schon, ich solle da hingehen. Jetzt habe ich wohl keine Ausrede mehr.

    My flatmate already told me I should go. I suppose I've no excuse left now.
