Day 67: Two Weeks of Sweeping

At a car workshop in Ingolstadt, Liam (A), a pupil on a two-week school work placement, gets a visit from his teacher, Mr Brandl (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Mr Brandl! Careful, there's oil all over the floor here.

    Keine Sorge, ich hab alte Schuhe an. Na, wie läuft das Praktikum?

    Don't worry, I've got old shoes on. So, how's the placement going?

    Ehrlich gesagt kehre ich seit einer Woche nur die Halle, statt was zu lernen.

    To be honest, I've done nothing but sweep the workshop for a week instead of learning anything.

    Nur kehren? Hat dir denn keiner der Mechaniker mal was gezeigt?

    Just sweeping? Haven't any of the mechanics shown you anything?

    Die schrauben den ganzen Tag, ohne mir was zu erklären. Ich bin halt der Praktikant.

    They work on the cars all day without explaining a thing to me. I'm just the work experience boy.

  6. B

    Dann rede ich gleich mal mit dem Chef der Werkstatt. So war das nicht abgemacht.

    Then I'll have a word with the workshop boss right away. That's not what we agreed.

  7. A

    Danke, aber lassen Sie mal, sonst bin ich die Petze. Ich frag ihn morgen selbst, ob ich beim Reifenwechsel helfen darf.

    Thanks, but please don't, or I'll be the snitch. I'll ask him myself tomorrow whether I can help with the tyre changes.
