Day 5: Prescriptions Without Paper

At a pharmacy in Regensburg, Hannelore Huber (A), an older customer, comes to Moritz (B), a young pharmacist, for the medicine her doctor has prescribed.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Grüß Gott. Ich habe mir die App einrichten lassen, aber mein Rezept finde ich nicht.

    Good morning. I had the app set up for me, but I can't find my prescription.

    Die brauchen Sie gar nicht. Lassen Sie mich einfach Ihre Krankenkassenkarte einlesen.

    You don't need the app at all. Just let me scan your health insurance card.

    Nur die Karte? Kein Rezept aus Papier mehr?

    Just the card? No paper prescription any more?

    Die Tabletten habe ich hier, nur die Salbe muss noch angemischt werden.

    I've got the tablets here, but the ointment still has to be made up.

    Früher mischte der Apotheker die Salben selbst. Das roch man bis auf die Straße.

    The pharmacist used to mix the ointments himself. You could smell it out in the street.

    Das machen wir heute noch, hinten im Labor. Möchten Sie mal schnuppern?

    We still do that, in the lab at the back. Would you like a sniff?
