Day 4: A Trade Fair and a Detour

In an office in Bochum, sales manager Andrea Wolff (A) plans the first business trip of her new sales assistant, Tobias Krämer (B): the trade fair in Hanover, with a client in Kassel on the way.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Herr Krämer, Sie fahren mit dem Firmenwagen zur Messe und schauen unterwegs in Kassel beim Kunden vorbei.

    Mr Krämer, you'll take the company car to the fair and drop in on the client in Kassel on the way.

    Ähm, da gibt es ein Problem: Ich habe keinen Führerschein.

    Um, there's a problem: I haven't got a driving licence.

    Ach so. Dann nehmen Sie stattdessen den Zug und übernachten in Kassel.

    Oh, I see. Then you'll take the train instead and stay the night in Kassel.

    In Kassel? Warum nicht gleich in Hannover?

    In Kassel? Why not just stay in Hanover?

    Solange die Messe läuft, zahlen Sie in Hannover locker 300 Euro pro Nacht.

    As long as the fair's on, you'll easily pay 300 euros a night in Hanover.

    Verstehe. Während Sie in Hannover mit dem Aufbau beschäftigt sind, bin ich also beim Kunden.

    I see. So while you're busy setting up in Hanover, I'll be at the client's.
