Day 3: Twelve Hours Instead of Eight

In her office hours at the university in Münster, Niklas (A), a student assistant, comes to see Professor Katharina Hartmann (B), who employs him.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Professor Hartmann, have you got a moment? It's about my contract.

    Natürlich, kommen Sie rein. Wollen Sie etwa aufhören?

    Of course, come in. You're not thinking of quitting, are you?

    Nein, aber mit den Interviews, die ich zusätzlich abtippe, sind es zwölf Stunden die Woche statt acht.

    No, but with the interviews I'm typing up on top, it comes to twelve hours a week instead of eight.

    Das hatte mir keiner gesagt. Aber das Budget gibt dieses Semester leider nichts mehr her.

    Nobody had told me that. But I'm afraid the budget has nothing left this semester.

    I'd expected that. It's just that my contract runs out in September.

    Dann bauen Sie die Überstunden im Juli ab, und ich verlängere bis März.

    Then take the extra hours off in July, and I'll extend it to March.
