Day 2: Company for the Tuesday Walk

On the stairs of a block of flats in Kassel, Heinz Brandt (A), a widower who has hardly left the house since his wife died, meets his downstairs neighbour Petra Kessler (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mrs Kessler, was that note in my letterbox from you?

    Ja. Unsere kleine Truppe geht dienstags spazieren, um mal rauszukommen.

    Yes. Our little group goes for a walk on Tuesdays, just to get out of the house.

    Da war ich im Frühjahr schon mal mitgegangen, aber nur kurz.

    I'd already gone along once in the spring, but not for long.

    Nur kurz? Haben Sie sich nicht getraut?

    Not for long? Did you lose your nerve?

    Ich hatte mir extra neue Schuhe gekauft, und dann stand ich da wie bestellt und nicht abgeholt.

    I'd bought new shoes specially, and then I just stood there like a spare part.

  6. B

    Dann komme ich nächsten Dienstag mit, damit Sie da wenigstens eine kennen. Die Schuhe müssen ja eingelaufen werden.

    Then I'll come along next Tuesday, so you know at least one person. Those shoes need breaking in, after all.
