Day 1: The Robot Vacuum Wants a Map

In their flat in Leipzig, Lisa (A) and her boyfriend Felix (B) set up the robot vacuum they have just bought.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Laut der App muss zuerst eine Karte der Wohnung erstellt werden.

    According to the app, a map of the flat has to be made first.

    Kein Problem, ich räume schnell die Kabel weg.

    No problem, I'll quickly tidy the cables away.

    Moment. Dafür sollen Fotos von jedem Zimmer in die Cloud hochgeladen werden.

    Hang on. For that, photos of every room are meant to be uploaded to the cloud.

    Na und? Das machen doch alle Geräte, die am WLAN hängen.

    So what? Every device on the Wi-Fi does that.

    Unser Schlafzimmer in irgendeiner Cloud? Solange die Einstellung an ist, bleibt das Ding im Karton.

    Our bedroom in some cloud or other? As long as that setting's on, the thing stays in its box.

  6. B

    Schon gut, hab's unter Datenschutz ausgeschaltet. Die Karte darf jetzt nur auf dem Gerät gespeichert werden.

    All right, I've switched it off under Privacy. Now the map may only be saved on the device itself.
