Day 49: Grandad Asks About the App

In his flat in Chemnitz, Gerhard (A), who ran a textile factory for twenty years, asks his grandson Fabian (B) about the app his start-up is building.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Also, erklär mir das noch mal langsam: Was macht eure App?

    Right, explain it to me again, slowly: what does your app do?

    Damit kann man kaputte Kleidung reparieren lassen. Die wird abgeholt und in einer Schneiderei geflickt.

    You can use it to get damaged clothes repaired. They're collected and mended at a tailor's.

    Schön und gut. Aber wer bezahlt euch, der Kunde oder die Schneiderei?

    That's all very well. But who pays you, the customer or the tailor's?

  4. B

    Die Schneidereien, pro Auftrag. Und programmieren lassen wir die App von einer Agentur in Leipzig.

    The tailors, per order. And we're having the app programmed by an agency in Leipzig.

    Ihr lasst das Wichtigste von Fremden bauen? Und wenn die morgen pleitegehen?

    You're having the most important part built by strangers? And what if they go bust tomorrow?

    Hm, darüber haben wir ehrlich gesagt noch gar nicht nachgedacht. Was würdest du machen?

    Hmm, to be honest, we haven't really thought about that. What would you do?

    Stellt einen eigenen Programmierer ein. In meiner Fabrik wurde nie was Wichtiges aus der Hand gegeben.
