Day 31: Six Months in Trondheim

In the canteen of an engineering firm in Stuttgart, Leon (A), a young engineer, tells his colleague Noah (B), who lives with his girlfriend Jule, what their manager has just said on a call.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Die Chefin meinte, man suche jemanden für sechs Monate in Trondheim.

    The boss said they're looking for someone to go to Trondheim for six months.

    Seit das Projekt läuft, will ich da hin! Braucht man kein Norwegisch?

    I've wanted to go there ever since the project started! Don't you need Norwegian?

    Angeblich nicht, man brauche nur Englisch. Die Wohnung zahle sogar die Firma.

    Apparently not, you only need English. The company even pays for the flat.

    Und wo ist der Haken? Ich bewerbe mich, solange die Stelle noch frei ist!

    So where's the catch? I'm applying while the job's still going!

    Der Haken heißt Jule. Die hat doch gerade erst ihren neuen Job angefangen.

    The catch is called Jule. She's only just started her new job.

  6. B

    Oh Mann, die Probezeit. Ich sollte wohl erst mal mit ihr reden.

    Oh man, her probation period. I'd better talk to her first.
