Day 30: The Lights Need Wi-Fi

Late one evening in their house in Ulm, Kerstin (A) tries to switch off the living room light, which her husband Andreas (B) has connected to a voice assistant.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Andreas! Das Wohnzimmerlicht geht nicht aus, und dein Sprachassistent reagiert nicht.

    Andreas! The living room light won't go off, and your voice assistant isn't responding.

    Mist, das WLAN ist weg. Und die Lampen sind nun mal alle damit verbunden.

    Blast, the Wi-Fi's down. And the lamps are all connected to it, of course.

    Großartig. Wenn wir normale Schalter hätten, wäre ich längst im Bett.

    Brilliant. If we had normal switches, I'd be in bed by now.

    Moment, ich starte den Router neu. Und schrei bitte nicht mehr die Lampe an.

    Hang on, I'll restart the router. And please stop shouting at the lamp.

    Warte mal, was ist denn hinter dieser Abdeckung versteckt? Der alte Lichtschalter!

    Wait a minute, what's hidden behind this cover? The old light switch!

  6. B

    Oh, der ist ja noch angeschlossen. Dann ist er ab heute unser Notfallsystem.

    Oh, it's still connected. Then from today it's our emergency system.
