Day 32: Schrippe or Semmel?

At home in Rosenheim, Lina (A), a girl whose family moved there from Berlin in the summer, tells her mother Nadine (B) about the words her new classmates use.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mama, hier sagt keiner Schrippe. In meiner Klasse sagen alle Semmel und Servus!

    Mum, nobody here says Schrippe. Everyone in my class says Semmel for a bread roll, and Servus for hello!

    Tja, wir sind halt in Bayern. Ist die Umstellung schwer für dich?

    Well, we're in Bavaria now. Are you finding the change hard?

    Nö, ich lass mir jeden Tag neue Wörter erklären, damit ich alles verstehe.

    Nah, I get them to explain new words to me every day, so that I understand everything.

    Du musst aber nicht gleich Bayerisch lernen, nur um dazuzugehören.

    But you don't have to learn Bavarian just to fit in.

    Lass mich doch mal ausreden! Heute hab ich der ganzen Klasse das Wort Schrippe beigebracht.

    Let me finish! Today I taught the whole class the word Schrippe.

    Die Schrippe erobert Bayern! Ich bin gespannt, was der Bäcker morgen sagt.

    The Schrippe is conquering Bavaria! I can't wait to hear what the baker says tomorrow.
