Day 19: Sold Out by Eleven

At the Rheinaue flea market in Bonn, Sebastian (A) helps his daughter Frieda (B) pack up the stall where she has been selling homemade lemonade, while her little brother Paul is at home.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Der Tisch ist abgebaut, die Kasse ist voll. Zufrieden, Chefin?

    The table's packed away and the cash box is full. Happy, boss?

    Nicht ganz. Um elf war alles ausverkauft, und danach kamen noch zwanzig Leute.

    Not really. Everything was sold out by eleven, and twenty more people came after that.

    Hättest du auf mich gehört, hätten wir die zweite Kiste auch mitgenommen.

    If you'd listened to me, we'd have brought the second crate too.

    Zwanzig Leute mal zwei Euro! Das wären vierzig Euro mehr Umsatz gewesen.

    Twenty people times two euros! That would have been forty euros more in takings.

    Nächstes Mal machen wir doppelt so viel. Aber wer schleppt dann die Flaschen?

    Next time we'll make twice as much. But who's going to lug the bottles?

  6. B

    Das macht Paul für drei Euro. Du bist dann nur noch der Fahrer.

    Paul will do that for three euros. You'll just be the driver.
