Day 20: Almost King of the Schützenfest

In a café in Neuss, the day after the Schützenfest, Sarah (A) and Lena (C) meet their friend Julian (B), who came very close to shooting down the last piece of the wooden bird.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Da ist ja unser Beinahe-König! Hast du wenigstens ausgeschlafen?

    There's our almost-king! Did you at least get a lie-in?

    Kaum. Zwei Zentimeter weiter links, und der Rest vom Vogel wäre runtergekommen.

    Hardly. Two centimetres further left, and the rest of the bird would have come down.

    Dann hättest du echt den Vogel abgeschossen, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.

    Then you'd really have shot down the bird and stolen the show, in every sense of the word.

    Schade, wir hätten dich so gern mit der Königskette gesehen.

    Shame, we'd have loved to see you wearing the king's chain.

  5. B

    Ehrlich gesagt bin ich erleichtert. Als König hätte ich ein Jahr lang jede Runde zahlen müssen.

    To be honest, I'm relieved. As king I'd have had to pay for every round for a whole year.

  6. C

    Moment, hast du etwa absichtlich danebengeschossen? Dann schmeißt du heute erst recht eine Runde.

    Hang on, did you miss on purpose? Then you're definitely buying a round today.
