Day 18: The Photo Album From 1989

At her home in Halle, Brigitte (A) looks through an old photo album with her daughter Anja (B) and her grandson Elias (C), who needs photos from 1989 for a history project.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    October '89, outside the Marktkirche. Can you see the burning candles?

    Und das bin ich an der geöffneten Grenze, nach sieben Stunden Stau.

    And that's me at the newly opened border, after seven hours in a traffic jam.

    Aus einem Westpaket meiner Schwester. Da war nicht nur Kaffee drin, sondern auch eine Jeans.

    It's from a parcel my sister sent from the West. There wasn't just coffee in it, there was a pair of jeans too.

    Die habe ich getragen, bis sie Löcher hatte! Was steht denn drauf?

    I wore those jeans till they had holes in them! What does it say?

    „Irgendwann feiern wir zusammen Weihnachten.“ Im Dezember saß sie wirklich bei uns am Tisch.

    'One day we'll spend Christmas together.' And in December she really was sitting at our table.
