Day 127: The Friend Who Went Quiet

In a beer garden in Würzburg, Jasmin (A) and Timon (B) finally see their friend Carolin (C) again, who went silent in their group chat weeks ago.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Da ist sie ja! Carolin, du warst wochenlang wie vom Erdboden verschluckt.

    There she is! Carolin, for weeks it was as if the earth had swallowed you up.

    Nicht mal in der Gruppe hast du dich gemeldet, und da wird sonst jedes Mittagessen gepostet.

    You didn't even say anything in the group chat, and normally every lunch gets posted there.

    Ich weiß, sorry. Im Frühjahr wurde ich befördert, und danach war ich nur noch erschöpft.

    I know, sorry. I got promoted in the spring, and after that I was just exhausted.

    Und wir haben dir nur Memes geschickt. Wir hätten viel früher mal anrufen sollen.

    And all we did was send you memes. We should have rung much sooner.

    Ich wäre eh nicht rangegangen. Mir wurde dann eine Auszeit verordnet, und seitdem geht's langsam bergauf.

    I wouldn't have picked up anyway. Then I was told to take time off, and since then things have slowly been looking up.
