Day 128: A Mural on the Garage Door

In Wuppertal, the city of the Schwebebahn suspension railway, Lia (A), a teenager, asks her mother Cornelia (B) whether she can paint a mural on the family's garage door for a school art project.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mama, für mein Kunstprojekt soll ich ein Wandbild malen. Darf ich unser Garagentor nehmen?

    Mum, I'm supposed to paint a mural for my art project. Can I use our garage door?

    Das Tor sieht doch jeder, der vorbeikommt. So eine Entscheidung treffe ich nicht allein.

    Anyone who walks past can see that door. I'm not making a decision like that on my own.

    Papa ist dafür, und die Garage ist doch unser Eigentum! Als Motiv nehme ich die Schwebebahn.

    Dad's for it, and the garage is our property, isn't it? My subject will be the suspension railway.

    Trotzdem bestehe ich darauf, dass wir vorher mit den Nachbarn sprechen.

    Even so, I insist that we talk to the neighbours first.

    Auch mit Frau Schlüter? Die beschwert sich schon über jedes Blatt auf dem Gehweg.

    Even Mrs Schlüter? She complains about every leaf on the pavement.

    Gerade mit ihr. Zeig ihr eine Skizze, und vielleicht fährt ihr Dackel in der Schwebebahn mit.

    Especially her. Show her a sketch, and maybe her dachshund gets a ride on the suspension railway.
