Day 126: Staying at School Until Four

At home in Krefeld, Christoph (A) hears a request from his daughter Ella (B), who is in her first year at school: she wants to join the OGS, her primary school's afternoon programme, which runs until four.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Bis vier in der Schule bleiben? Letzte Woche wolltest du morgens noch nicht mal hin!

    Stay at school until four? Last week you didn't even want to go in the mornings!

    Da war Smilla ja noch nicht in der OGS. Die bauen nachmittags eine Bude im Schulgarten!

    That's because Smilla wasn't in the OGS then. In the afternoons they're building a den in the school garden!

    Klingt toll. Aber es kommt darauf an, ob du dann noch Zeit fürs Klavier hast.

    Sounds great. But it depends on whether you'll still have time for the piano.

    Aber je länger ich in der Schule bleibe, desto schlauer werde ich. Sagst du doch immer!

    But the longer I stay at school, the cleverer I get. You always say so!

    Erwischt. Na gut, wenn du abends zehn Minuten übst, melde ich dich an.

    You've got me there. All right, if you practise for ten minutes every evening, I'll sign you up.

    Juhu! Und freitags holst du mich schon mittags ab, dann essen wir Pfannkuchen, ja?

    Yay! And on Fridays you'll pick me up at lunchtime and we'll have pancakes, okay?

    Abgemacht. Ich freue mich jetzt schon darauf, dass ich dich wenigstens freitags für mich habe.

    Deal. I'm already looking forward to having you to myself on Fridays at least.
