Day 105: No Sleep Before Exams

In the Mensa, the student canteen at the University of Göttingen, Joris (A), a first-year student, has lunch with Murat (B), a student a few years further on.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Sorry, dass ich so gähne. In der Prüfungsphase schlafe ich höchstens vier Stunden pro Nacht.

    Sorry for yawning like this. During exams I get four hours' sleep a night at most.

    Kenn ich. Vor meiner ersten Statistikklausur habe ich nächtelang gelernt und bin trotzdem durchgefallen.

    I know the feeling. Before my first statistics exam I studied night after night and still failed.

    Echt? Und wie hast du das in den Griff gekriegt?

    Really? And how did you get it under control?

    Indem ich feste Pausen eingeplant habe. Und ab zehn liegt das Handy in der Küche, damit ich abschalten kann.

    By planning in fixed breaks. And from ten o'clock my phone stays in the kitchen so that I can switch off.

    Pausen? Dann schaffe ich den ganzen Stoff doch nie.

    Breaks? Then I'll never get through all the material.

    Du schaffst mehr, indem du weniger machst. Dienstags laufen wir am Kiessee, falls du mal den Kopf frei kriegen willst.

    You get more done by doing less. We go running at the Kiessee on Tuesdays, if you ever want to clear your head.
