Day 104: Watching the Match Without the Score

At a design agency in Dortmund, Yannick (A) chats to his colleague Larissa (B), a devoted Borussia Dortmund fan, on the afternoon of a match.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Hast du heute Abend nicht die Besprechung beim Kunden? Da spielt doch Dortmund.

    Haven't you got the client meeting tonight? Dortmund are playing then.

    Ich weiß. Statt live zu gucken, schaue ich mir hinterher die Aufzeichnung an.

    I know. Instead of watching it live, I'll watch the recording afterwards.

    Ohne vorher das Ergebnis zu erfahren? Das schaffst du in Dortmund nie.

    Without finding out the score first? You'll never manage that in Dortmund.

    Doch. Ich schalte das Handy aus und fahre nach Hause, ohne mit jemandem zu reden.

    Oh yes, I will. I'll switch my phone off and go home without talking to anyone.

    Ich wette um einen Döner: Bis zum Ende der Besprechung wird es dir jemand verraten haben.

    I bet you a doner kebab that someone will have told you by the end of the meeting.

    Die Wette gilt. Aber falls du es mir selbst verrätst, zahlst du den Döner, statt ihn zu gewinnen.

    You're on. But if you tell me yourself, you pay for the kebab instead of winning it.

    Keine Sorge, ich halte dicht. Aber der Kunde hat die Besprechung gerade in eine Sportkneipe verlegt.

    Don't worry, my lips are sealed. But the client has just moved the meeting to a sports bar.
