Day 215: Breaking Plates at the Polterabend

In Celle, at a friend's Polterabend, the party before a wedding, Bent (A) arrives and finds his friend Mieke (B) in the front garden.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Sag mal, wieso werfen die alle ihre Teller vor die Haustür?

    Hang on, why is everyone throwing their plates down in front of the door?

    Na, das ist doch ein Polterabend! Man sagt, dass das dem Paar Glück bringt.

    Well, it's a Polterabend! They say it brings the couple luck.

    Und das ganze Geschirr, das hier kaputtgeht, bringen die Gäste selbst mit?

    And all the crockery that gets broken here, the guests bring it themselves?

    Klar, alte Teller, die keiner mehr braucht. Nur kein Glas, das bringt Unglück.

    Sure, old plates nobody needs any more. Just no glass, that brings bad luck.

    Und wer räumt das alles nachher auf?

    And who clears all that up afterwards?

  6. B

    Die beiden, die heiraten, und zwar zusammen. Und wir werfen dabei extra noch ein paar Teller!

    The two who are getting married, and they do it together. And we throw a few more plates on purpose while they're at it!
