Day 200: Gherkins on the Spreewald Punt

On a punt trip through the Spreewald canals near Lübbenau, Roland (A), a local man, gets talking to the young visitor next to him, Juri (B), who is from Bavaria.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Wollen Sie mal eine Gurke probieren? Die gibt's sowohl sauer als auch süß.

    Would you like to try a gherkin? You get them both sour and sweet.

    Gern, danke! In Bayern kenne ich die nur aus dem Supermarkt.

    I'd love to, thanks! In Bavaria I only know them from the supermarket.

    Aber Vorsicht: Entweder man mag die sauren oder die süßen. Beides mag keiner.

    But be warned: you either like the sour ones or the sweet ones. Nobody likes both.

    Ehrlich gesagt schmecken mir beide! Die sauren sogar noch besser.

    To be honest, I like both! The sour ones even more.

    Na, Sie sind ja der Erste! Dann werden Sie wohl zwei Gläser mitnehmen.

    Well, you're the first! Then I suppose you'll be taking two jars home.

    Eins werde ich meiner Mutter mitbringen, und das andere esse ich auf der Rückfahrt.

    I'll take one home for my mum, and I'll eat the other on the way back.
