Day 194: A Palm Tree in the Taxi
On moving day in Greifswald, Piotr (A) is waiting outside his old flat with a huge palm tree when Eckhard (B), a taxi driver, pulls up.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Nach Eldena, bitte, und die Palme muss auch mit. Im Umzugswagen war kein Platz mehr.
To Eldena, please, and the palm tree's coming too. There was no room left in the removal van.
-
B
Oha, die ist ja so hoch, dass sie niemals in den Kofferraum passt.
Whoa, it's so tall that there's no way it'll fit in the boot.
-
A
Deshalb hatte ich ja extra ein Großraumtaxi bestellt.
That's why I specially asked for a big taxi.
-
B
Die waren leider alle unterwegs. Aber warten Sie mal, ich klappe einfach die Sitze um.
They were all out, I'm afraid. But hang on, I'll just fold the seats down.
-
A
Super, danke! Und wo sitze ich dann, auf dem Dach?
Great, thanks! And where do I sit, then, on the roof?
-
B
Na, neben mir. Die Blätter haben Sie dann aber trotzdem im Gesicht.
Next to me, of course. But you'll still have the leaves in your face.
