Day 188: Our Stall at the Advent Bazaar

At a primary school in Weimar, Ylvi (A), a pupil, asks her class teacher, Mrs Rautenberg (B), about their class stall at the school's Advent bazaar.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    Mrs Rautenberg, do you know when the Advent bazaar is this year?

    Am ersten Freitag im Dezember. Hast du denn eine Idee für unseren Stand?

    On the first Friday in December. Have you got an idea for our stall, then?

    Wir haben uns gefragt, ob wir sowohl Plätzchen als auch Kakao verkaufen dürfen.

    We were wondering whether we could sell both biscuits and hot chocolate.

  4. B

    Gern. Aber dann helfen entweder ein paar Eltern mit, oder ihr wechselt euch ab.

    Sure. But then either a few parents help out, or you take turns.

    Abwechseln ist super! Dann kann ich zwischendurch auch mal ein Plätzchen probieren.

    Taking turns is great! Then I can try a biscuit now and then too.

  6. B

    Aber nur die kaputten, Ylvi. Die schönen wollen wir ja verkaufen.

    Only the broken ones, though, Ylvi. We want to sell the nice ones, after all.
