Day 165: A Baker Looking for Apprentices

In a taxi in Bremerhaven, Konrad (A), a master baker, speaks to his driver, Gunnar (B), who has just been on the phone to his son.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Excuse me, I couldn't help overhearing. Your son's looking for an apprenticeship?

    Ja, aber er kann sich einfach nicht entscheiden: entweder Schiffsmechaniker oder Koch.

    Yes, but he just can't make up his mind: either a ship's mechanic or a chef.

    Und was wird es wohl werden?

    And which will it be, do you think?

    Keine Ahnung. Mir gefällt ehrlich gesagt weder das eine noch das andere.

    No idea. To be honest, I don't like either of them.

    Dann nehmen Sie doch meine Karte. Ich bin Bäckermeister und finde seit Jahren keine Azubis.

    Then why not take my card? I'm a master baker, and I haven't been able to find apprentices for years.

    Danke! Aber jetzt wird er sich zwischen drei Berufen nicht entscheiden können!
