Day 136: Our First ID Cards

In the schoolyard in Augsburg, Emilian (A), who has just turned sixteen, asks his classmate Leyla (B) about getting his first ID card before the class trip to Rome.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native German, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Yes, last week. You need both a biometric photo and your old children's passport.

    Won't a nice photo on my phone do?

    Nee, das Foto macht man entweder beim Fotografen oder direkt im Amt.

    Nope, you have the photo taken either at a photographer's or right there at the office.

    Okay. Dann gehe ich morgen nach der Schule einfach mal hin.

    OK. Then I'll just go along tomorrow after school.

    Entweder du buchst vorher online einen Termin, oder du wartest da stundenlang!

    Either you book an appointment online first, or you'll be waiting there for hours!
