Day 114: A Gift for the Grandson's Wedding

Over coffee in Lüneburg, Irmgard (A), whose grandson is getting married next month, talks to her old friend Gerlinde (B) about a wedding present.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a German word to see what it means.

    What on earth do I give the bride and groom? The wedding's next month already.

    Ich würde Geld schenken, in einer schönen Karte. Das brauchen junge Leute immer.

    I'd give them money, in a nice card. Young people always need that.

    Ach, Geld ist so unpersönlich. Mir wäre was Persönliches lieber.

    Oh, money's so impersonal. I'd rather give them something personal.

    Und was? Geschirr haben die beiden doch bestimmt schon.

    Like what? They're bound to have crockery already.

    Ich dachte, ich schreibe ihnen alle Familienrezepte in ein schönes Buch.

    I thought I'd write out all the family recipes for them in a nice book.

    Schöne Idee! Könntest du mir dann auch dein Rezept für Butterkuchen aufschreiben?

    Lovely idea! Could you write down your butter cake recipe for me too, then?
