   Darf ich mich zu Ihnen setzen? Am großen Tisch kenne ich niemanden, und allein schmeckt der Butterkuchen nach einer Beerdigung noch trauriger.

   May I join you? I don't know anyone at the big table, and on your own the butter cake tastes even sadder after a funeral.

   Aber gern. Sie haben doch vorhin die Träumerei gespielt? Frau Brodersen hätte gesagt: zu viel Pedal, aber schön empfunden.

   Please do. You were the one who played the Träumerei earlier, weren't you? Mrs Brodersen would have said: too much pedal, but beautifully felt.

   Genau das hat sie mir zwölf Jahre lang jeden Dienstag gesagt! Waren Sie etwa auch ihre Schülerin?

   That's exactly what she told me every Tuesday for twelve years! Were you one of her pupils too?

   Donnerstags um drei, dreißig Jahre vor Ihnen. Stand an ihrer Tür noch: „Man übe täglich, es sei denn, das Fieber liegt über 39 Grad“?

   Thursdays at three, thirty years before you. Did her door still say: 'Practise daily, unless your temperature is above 39 degrees'?

   Und darunter: „Die Nägel seien kurz, das Handy bleibe im Flur.“ Das mit dem Handy hat sie später mit Kuli dazugeschrieben.

   Bei mir stand da noch: „Kaugummi bleibe vor der Tür.“ Haben Sie zum Abschied auch Noten geschenkt bekommen?

   In my day it still said: 'Chewing gum to stay outside the door.' Were you given some music as a leaving present too?

   Zum Abitur, ja: Schumanns Kinderszenen. Vorne drin steht in ihrer Handschrift „Für Astrid, für später“, und ich habe mich immer gefragt, wer diese Astrid ist.

   When I left school, yes: Schumann's Kinderszenen. Inside the front cover it says in her handwriting 'For Astrid, for later', and I've always wondered who this Astrid is.

   Die sitzt vor Ihnen. Ich habe die Noten mit neunzehn geschenkt bekommen und aus Trotz auf ihrem Flügel liegen lassen: Ich wollte nie wieder spielen.

   She's sitting right in front of you. I was given that music at nineteen and left it on her grand piano out of defiance: I never wanted to play again.

   Und sie hat sie dreißig Jahre für später aufgehoben. Dann gehören die Noten eigentlich Ihnen.

   And she kept it for later, for thirty years. Then by rights the music is yours.

    Auf keinen Fall, bei Ihnen sind sie in besseren Händen. Aber die Träumerei würde ich gern noch einmal vorgespielt bekommen, ohne Trauergäste.

    Certainly not, it's in better hands with you. But I'd love to have the Träumerei played for me once more, without the mourners.
