   And the pool has been shut for two years without a digger ever turning up. We're onto something big.

   We've already asked the press office. The answer came back twenty minutes later: the allegation was entirely without foundation.

   Dann lag die Antwort schon fertig in der Schublade. 1998 hatte ich als Volontärin im Sauerland fast dieselbe Geschichte, nur mit einer Turnhalle.

   Then the answer was already sitting in a drawer, ready to go. In 1998, as a trainee reporter in the Sauerland, I had almost the same story, only with a sports hall.

   Das Geld ist aufgetaucht, und ich wäre fast untergegangen. Die für die Turnhalle bewilligten Millionen steckten im neuen Ratssaal, und der Bürgermeister, der sich seiner soliden Haushaltsführung rühmte, spielte mit meinem Chef Skat.

   The money resurfaced, and I nearly went under. The millions approved for the sports hall were sitting in the new council chamber, and the mayor, who prided himself on his sound handling of the budget, played Skat with my editor.

    He tried. What saved me were copies of every document in my mother's freezer, between the peas and the beef olives: the rival paper would have jumped at the chance to print them.
