   Mum, have you got a minute? I've prepared a written proposal for my first phone, with a cover page and a table of contents.

   Mit Inhaltsverzeichnis, alle Achtung. Aber gleich vorweg: Die schönste Mappe hülfe dir nichts, wenn der Inhalt nicht überzeugt.

   A table of contents, I'm impressed. But let me say this straight away: the nicest folder in the world wouldn't help you if the contents don't convince me.

   Punkt eins: Die von Frau Albrecht auf dem Elternabend empfohlene Bildschirmzeit von einer Stunde am Tag halte ich ein. Punkt zwei: Nachts schläft das Handy in der Küche.

   Point one: I'll keep to the screen time Mrs Albrecht recommended at the parents' evening, one hour a day. Point two: at night the phone sleeps in the kitchen.

   Exemplary. My counter-proposal: the family phone that's been lying in the kitchen drawer for years. Calls and texts, that's all you need at twelve.

    My weekly report would have to arrive right now: 'Your screen time is up twelve per cent.' Oh well, if I won now, it would be a Pyrrhic victory anyway.
