   Lotte, dein Schneckenprojekt hab ich mit Vergnügen gelesen. Nur beim ersten Satz musste ich zweimal hinschauen: „Hiermit reiche ich fristgerecht nachstehendes Experiment ein.“

   Lotte, I really enjoyed reading your snail project. Only the first sentence made me look twice: 'I hereby submit the following experiment within the prescribed period.'

   So schreibt meine Mama auch immer, die arbeitet im Rathaus. Dann wird man ernst genommen, sagt sie. Gefällt Ihnen das nicht?

   That's how my mum always writes too; she works at the town hall. She says that way people take you seriously. Don't you like it?

   People here take you seriously anyway. But reviewers want to see data, not stock phrases. How did you go about measuring?

   Das Vorgehen ist gut. Nur steht da hinsichtlich der Ergebnisse bloß: „Die Messdaten liegen anbei.“ Und anbei lag leider nichts.

   The procedure is good. But regarding the results, all it says is: 'The measurement data are enclosed.' And sadly, nothing was enclosed.

   Oh, die sind noch in meinem Heft. Das sah mir zu unordentlich aus, mit lauter Radierspuren und ein bisschen Schneckenschleim.

   Oh, they're still in my exercise book. It looked too messy to me, full of rubbed-out bits and a bit of snail slime.

   Zeig mal her. Sechzig Messungen mit Datum, und auf nassem Holz sind sie fast doppelt so schnell! Angesichts solcher Daten stört kein Fleck.

   Let me see. Sixty measurements with dates, and on wet wood they're almost twice as fast! With data like these, no stain matters.

   Die schnellste heißt übrigens Frau Hurtig. Aber muss ich dann alle meine schönen Sätze streichen? Mama sagt, ohne „hiermit“ gilt gar nichts.

   The fastest one's called Mrs Speedy, by the way. But do I have to cross out all my nice sentences, then? Mum says nothing counts without 'hereby'.

   Im Rathaus mag das stimmen. In der Forschung zählen die Daten, und die schönen Sätze hebst du dir für die Dankesrede auf.

   That may be true at the town hall. In research it's the data that count, and you save the nice sentences for your acceptance speech.

    Acceptance speech? Does that mean I'm through to the next round? Then I'll stick the table in at the back without delay!

    Das Ergebnis wird dir anlässlich der Preisverleihung mitgeteilt, so viel Amtsdeutsch muss sein. Aber die Tabelle kommt nicht nach hinten, sondern ganz nach vorn.

    You'll be notified of the result on the occasion of the award ceremony: that much officialese is a must. But the table doesn't go at the back, it goes right at the front.
